Sea otters are incredibly smart and mischievous. These furry marine mammals love to problem solve and figure out new ways to cause trouble. That’s why we like to give them puzzles and activities to engage their brains! Activities like opening and closing doors.

Recently, I did an interview with Newsweek about this video!

I wish I could say that I taught this intelligent marine mammal how to open and close doors. But the truth is… he taught himself! I simply trained him to open and close the door when asked. Sometimes when you train an animal to do something when asked… they’re less likely to do the behavior when no one is looking! Sadly, that didn’t work for Hardy here. He’s always been a bit of a troublemaking sea otter and opening/closing doors is a very good way to make trouble!

Hardy is an adult male sea otter who was rescued in 2017 when he was just a pup and tragically became separated from his mom. Sea otters spend the first 6-8 months of their lives with their moms, learning how to survive in the unforgiving North Pacific Ocean. Without these skills, they cannot survive in the wild. That is why Hardy was deemed non-releasable by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada after being orphaned, rescued, and taken to Port Hardy for treatment.
